I went to see No Age last week. Being amongst all the sweaty, throbbing bodies made me think of the first live show I went to....Me Mom & Morgentaler. I was 13, I danced/moshed my little heart out.

This year for Christmas, I've asked everyone in my family to write something for me instead of buying a gift.

This has inspired me to make a public suggestion/request.

Instead of (or as well as) buying a gift for someone you love this year....write them a letter. I mean heartfelt, hand write...pen, paper, envelope...the whole shabang. The internet has brought us closer in SO MANY ways, but is also facilitating the decline of the really connecting and appreciating the beautiful relationships we have cultivated and even lost touch of over the years. In this project honesty is VERY important. It can be difficult to say things to people that we love, but why not let them know exactly how you feel in writing....something they can keep & touch - a little piece of you.

This is the plan:

Photocopy (you can hide who it's from/to if you'd like to remain anonymous) your letter(s)
Send copy of letter(s) to me - include a large self-addressed, postage-paid envelope!!
I will make a compilation of selected letters and mail back to everyone.

I will set up a P.O. Box soon.
Just wanted to get you all thinking....and perhaps writing.

We used to build houses. We used to build houses in snow.

Every year, the area to the left of our neighbors driveway laid claim to our main hub of residential play. The bent arms of a sturdy pine weighed down by relentless, mid-January driven, Quebec bred snow made a quaint refuge. It was large enough to house 3 budding girls and their 2 impossibly young brothers. This house had eyes. This house had rules. And like any dwelling inhabited by more than one person, a not-so-subtle hierarchy.

I was the oldest, and at times it felt like a necessity to be around - who else would wipe Christophe's nose with the sleeve of their snowsuit when his sister refused to share the stick she had been using as a broom? Every once in awhile (if we'd all slept well the night before and been fed like kings at lunch) it was as if some ineffable emotional sedative rode timidly on the air that blew across the Laurentian country side. In these moments time stood still. Patience could rest and the years that divided us in age seemed to stretch on for decades.

A few years later, I would have a closet to escape to. I quickly learned that in our new not-made-of-snow-house, the one above the store, the closet handle in the bedroom my sister and I shared could be removed completely. I used to lock myself inside, handle clutched in my unusually small hands, exiting only when I felt my senses had been adequately deprived. Now, one might wonder what would compelled an almost-grown-teenager to do such a thing...in such a ridiculously small space at that. You see, sitting there in the dark, no one knowing where I was for what felt like hours (but was probably no more than 30 minute stretches) I could be still, I could hear. That closet was the only place I could think, and really feel my own thoughts.

It was that same compulsion for control and quiet that drove me to build my 'secret' house in the snow. The one in the woods.

my senses have been on overload since i've been back in toronto.

store openings, dinners, sirens and once again...the city heat.

i've also been breathing life into my newest baby....COVET CLOSET. as my friends (and some loyal acquaintances) know, i've been selling vintage clothes & shoes for the last 6-7 months. as of SEPT 1st it's gonna be an official gig. i'm going to be selling shoes&handbags in CHARLIE (www.iluvcharlie.com) on Queen West & will be selling the rest on ETSY.

Well, my mini tour is coming close to an end....This makes me sad. I could honestly do this for a verrry long time.

It's the best road trip anyone could ask for!! You get to eat & sleep for free, you meet the MOST incredible people & get the opportunity to visit all the places only the locals know about!! Oh, and play music every night.

This morning I went out to the backyard of the house we were staying @ and picked a few of the juiciest peaches I've EVER eaten from one of 4 different kind of fruit trees....and now I'm nestled in a tiny town in the middle of the BREATH TAKING glacial topped rocky mountains.

Tomorrow we make the drive down to Kaslo, I'm looking forward to the tiny ferry ride.
